Psalm 37:4

Psalm 37:4*

This is a very popular verse that a lot of Christians know by heart just because of going to church. It states, “Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” I have known this verse for a really long time, and today it hit me what it really means. What I thought it meant and what it actually means are two very different things.

What I thought it meant: I thought it meant that if you know God and are a Christian He will give you the things that you want. I have always told people that as well, for that I am sorry. I thought that if you prayed for it, you would get it because God wanted you to have it.

What it actually means (to me now): It means to me now that if you “Delight yourself in the Lord” your heart will change. You will want different things. You will want to live your life as the Lord wants, you will want the Lord to take control of your life. Delighting yourself in the Lord means that you are trying to walk like Christ. It means that your heart will want what the Lord wants because your Delighting yourself in HIM. He will show you the right and the wrong, and when you know what is wrong you will want the right. The “desires” of your heart will become the same “desires” of the Lord heart. You will want to be one with God, and walk on the path of righteousness and not wickedness. It is just like Proverbs 3:5-6 says “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” When you trust in Him and your desires become the same as His, your path becomes straight.

Amen.

*All scripture that I use is from an NIV version bible. :)

  1. Wow, this is really good. And I've found it to be true in my own life. Just recently I was asking God to change a particular circumstance to my will. But then I started asking for His will. And when I did, my perspective changed and so did what I thought I wanted. The situation ended in a way that was far different from what I'd originally wanted - but also far better. Now, I've been asking for my will to conform to His will.

Thanks for being vulnerable and sharing!
